SPARE started its activities in Armenia in 2001, with the local environmental organisation NGO Eco-club "TAPAN" as responsible for the project. Almost all regions are covered by the project. In addition to educational activities TAPAN is also implementing practical energy projects on solar heating and windows restoration. TAPAN is working with several partners, for example gives cooperation with Youth and Community Action Program (implemented by Academy for Educational Development, supported by USAID) a possibility for SPARE to be spread through the many local centers of this project.
Participants
Today, 57 high schools from nine regions are active participants of SPARE projects. In the 6th year of project realization, some 3000 pupils and 70 teachers have been taking part in SPARE.
Some 14 schools are inactive participants. Teachers in those schools are prepared and trained through seminars and they have been teaching SPARE course before. They stayed inactive participants due to their personal demands – payment for their work. In a year or two, when SPARE becomes a part of the Armenian Ministry of science and education official list of ‘recommended elective activities’, teachers will be paid for their work and those schools will automatically resume their activities and will became active participants again.
