Russia has been a part of SPARE since 1996. SPARE in Russia is coordinated by Interregional public youth environmental organization ‘Friends of the Baltic’ (with support of Norges Naturvernforbund) and Inforce Europe (International European network for sustainable energy)
’Friends of the Baltic ’ as an national coordinator of SPARE and public organization is coordinating SPARE in different regions, contribute to the introduction of SPARE to school and after school education, distribute SPARE materials, gives methodical support to pedagogues, participate in introducing energy saving measures and renewable sources of energy use. Public organizations interact with authorities, centers of energy efficiency, educational institutions, national and international organizations.
Measures
On 26th of October in town Apatiti, regional coordinators of SPARE had a seminar ‘Energy saving in municipality’ for teachers and pedagogues in Murmansk region.
On 11-12th September, in Nizhniy Novgorod SPARE seminar was organized, where part took regional coordinator of the project from all federal counties of Russia. The international coordinator Dag
Arne Høystad (Norwegian Society for Conservation of Nature) was also present at the seminar.
Coordinators of SPARE conduct regional competitions and exhibitions of children’s work, practical activities, seminars and conferences on energy saving issues. Once a year in St. Petersburg an open day for public – Day of Alternative Energy is organized.
From 2005 an Allrussian competition ‘Energy and the environment’ and federal/regional stages of the competition is organized on annual basis. We plan to establish national competition of school project in energy saving. Program SPARE became an example for starting a project ‘Economically effective measures of energy saving in Russian education sector’. The project is coordinated by the Russian Ministry of education and science. Within this project with participation of SPARE experts, educational set of materials and program ‘Energy saving’ was made, and it received approval from ministry of education for 8th high school grade.
In 2005, public organizations started spreading program ‘Energy saving’ and international programs SPARE in seven federal counties of Russian federation.
In December 2006, allrussian electronic conference of SPARE coordinators was held.
Participants
From the very start, north-west regions of Russia – Murmansk, Karelia, St. Petersburg and Leningrad region participate in SPARE. Over 200 schools all over Russia were included in SPARE at the end of 1990s. Public organizations and educational sector from Archangelsk, Bryansk, Yekaterinburg, Pskov, Kaliningrad, Saratov, Nizhniy Novgorod, Novocherkassk, Irkutsk, Vladivostok and other regions of Russia became part of SPARE in a period of 2001-2004.
Publications
Three thousands of copies of educational material SPARE in Russian language were distributed throughout Russia and Russian speaking regions of neighboring countries. Participants of SPARE in Russia created and published more than 15 new designed and 20 thousands of copies of additional information and educational materials on energy efficiency issues.

Series of excursions with ’Climate and energy’ topic
Organization ‘Friends of the Baltic’ organized a series of excursions in St. Peterburg’s Ecocentre for schoolchildren and teachers of lower and middle grades and municipal representatives. The topics were climate, energy and sustainable solutions in energy efficiency.

The Public Chamber of Russian Federation will support energy saving within SPARE schools at north-west Russia.
‘Friends of the Baltic’ project ‘Energy saving in schools of North west Russia’ won the competition for grants of The Russian Public Chamber in 2008. In three SPARE schools in Leningrad region, Petrozavodsk and Apatite , windows will be insulated, seminars will be organized for spreading experience to other schools and neighborhoods.
