SPARE in Kyrgyzstan

Ecological Movement BIOM implements SPARE in Kyrgyzstan since 2003, and is now working in almost all regions of the country. BIOM has had special focus on solar water heating, and have been working with trainings on self-construction of solar water heaters in 20 villages throughout the country. This knowledge BIOM is also speeding to other countries of the SPARE network. At present BIOM is developing sustainable energy projects in three villages in Kyrgyzstan.

Description

Starting from 2003, international school project on energy saving and natural resources SPARE started in Kyrgyzstan. Pupils and teachers liked the project, since it was very interesting and was giving a lot of useful information, but also an opportunity for practical work. Our goal – to attract pupils as many as possible to work based on saving resources and energy. In one of the schools we made a demonstration stand, with renewable energy installations – solar collectors. Also, within the project, it was possible to spread solar collectors throughout the country and Central Asia that pupils themselves can built. Along with the SPARE project development, another project on spreading knowledge on solar energy and its utilization will be carried out, assisting with solar collectors use to locals, which have problems with energy supply. The project is planned to include all regions of Kirgizstan, but also to spread the experience on neighboring countries.

Participants

At the first stage of the project, five schools from Bishkek. First meeting of all teachers that take part in the project was organized, where there were discussed results from the last season project, and task for the coming season. In 2004 the project will have 35 schools from all over the country. Close cooperation of SPARE project with Education Academy of Kirgizstan enabled to integrate course ‘Energy saving’ into elementary schools, which will certainly have an impact on children’s knowledge of ecology, natural resources, climate change etc. The most attractive part of this course for school children is of course competition in drawing and solar collectors model building, as well as excursion to exhibition of solar collectors in school ‘Evrica’ and to laboratory of renewable energy of the institute for automatics.

Within the cooperation of ENSI company and SPARE program, in accordance with the program of development ‘School project of resources and energy use’ at the territory of Kirgizstan, on 18th of March 2004, a seminar ‘Energy saving in schools of Kirgizstan’ was held. The seminar was organized by ’Demonstrational zone of energy and hydro efficiency’, which is a partner organization of ENSI and youth environmental movement ‘Biom’, which is SPARE project partner in Kirgizstan. The theme of the seminar – ‘Energy saving technologies use in Kirgizstan’. Nine city and suburban schools were present at the seminar, with one school from Balchiki town, Isik-Kulska region. From the report ‘Realization of the energy saving project in Kirgizstan’ the participants learnt about the proposed project and its development. Questions like ‘Who would carry it out?’, ‘What is the benefit of it?’, ‘What kind of conditions and resources are necessary?’, ‘What to do after it is finished?’, ‘How much work during a working week would it require?’, ‘What happens at the end?’ were brought up. Also, themes of school project were suggested, on which the basic work would be based on. The participants received clear idea of planning, goals, tasks, methods and of use of the project results. The themes of the suggested activities have been discussed very broadly, application of energy, the heating, the lightening, renewable energy sources, since for participants these were the main steps for project fulfilling. Practical activities and exercise were offered to the participants.

Results

The report made was based on the year results, where teachers were telling about their activities. The vast majority of the teachers noted that the project was successfully fulfilled, with the exception of one municipality school that was relating to the project in a formal way. In many grades, the knowledge on the energy saving was tested at the beginning of the project. Forces and guards were created for control of the demands and consummation of electricity, with results put into the graphs. Pupils of one of the schools carried out electricity monitoring in their homes.

In several schools pupils and teachers initiated using quizzes, games, kaleidoscopes etc. all in relation to the energy saving. The rewards, as it was planned, were given at the start of the academic year. Representatives of the NGO ‘Biom’, ‘Demzona’, teachers, pupils and schools’ principals were prezend at the ceremony. Important directions of the project development became the possibility to increase renewable energy use in one of the schools included into the project. Kirgizstan has a great advantage in developing solar energy use and for now, it has enough of successful projects on space and water heating in homes.

Series of seminars on insulating windows and doors for the winter period. We conducted seminar on windows and door insulation for the winter season at High school 67 in Bishkek, January 2005. Pupils became familiar with the theory and practical tasks related to the topic, and we showed a documentary on the experience of international energy brigades in Apatiti town. Interest that was shown in the class was realized in a practical way. Children themselves actively started to repair windows with new technique of insulating with silicone stripes, shutting all holes that were causing the heating leakage.
